Tamar Energy Community (TEC) is a community benefit society owned and managed by its members, and operating for the benefit of the communities of Tavistock and Callington.
In the past, communities were responsible for their own energy generation. This required local innovation and was often the catalyst in developing local wealth (e.g. development of the local mining industry)
In the last thirty years local communities have become disconnected from their energy production, and energy has become a drain on our income (approx. £80m per annum for the TEC area).
TEC’s aim is to become a sustainable community enterprise supporting the development of local energy generation and supply, improvement of domestic and non-domestic energy efficiency and the alleviation of fuel poverty.
TEC will be opening Tavistock Town Shop in the late spring / early summer 2016, providing independent advice and support; and is developing its first community owned generation project.
WHAT WE’RE DOING …
We’ll earn money from developing commercial partnerships with businesses that can provide you with a good deal and service; and by developing community generation projects and selling the energy we generate. After a few years this could develop into a substantial contribution to the community fund each year.
The community fund will be available to local projects or reinvested in community generation.
All decisions about the Community Fund will be made democratically by the membership. Please join to have your say.
CAN YOU HELP?
If you’d like to get involved with the organisation and have skills which could help us develop and manage the enterprise we’d love to hear from you.
