LETS … coming to Tavistock

Have you heard of LETS – the Local Exchange and Trading System? It’s coming to Tavistock soon, so climb aboard and improve your quality of life.

The concept has been around for decades but now exchanging and trading your goods and services has been made easy due to user-friendly software that keeps track of credit points earned by LETS members.

The points for a traded good or service normally reflect its equivalent Sterling value so, for example, an hour of tutoring would earn a member 25 points – as £25 is a typical charge for this service.
Everyone has something to offer.  You can mow someone’s lawn, dog sit, trade fruit and veg grown in your garden, lend out a specialised tool, drive another member to a local airport, etc.  The list is endless.

A meeting will be held in the “Studio” in Kingdon House, Pym St, Tavistock, PL19 0AW on Wednesday, 17th May from 14:00 to 16:00 to explain LETS in more detail.
Rob Follett of the highly successful Falmouth LETS group will be on hand to demonstrate the functionality of the LETS software.
Robin Williams, a Tavistock resident, will lead the discussion.  His immediate goal is to form a committee of volunteers to create a plan for a local group.

First Tavistock Seed Swap at Local Matters – April 2017

Tavistock’s first Seed Swap was a great success on Saturday 8th April. We had  just over a hundred visitors dropping into Local Matters for seeds, advice and a chat. We’d like to thank Rob and Diana from Holsworthy Organics for helping us offer a great range of seeds; and to all the local allotment holders and other local growers who bought in seeds to share. The courgette seeds seemed to be very popular and were snapped up quickly.

If you missed it, we still have seeds to share at Local Matters (Elbow Lane, Tavistock) every day (except Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays) between 11:00 and 13:00. If you don’t have any to swap, or just too many to use yourself you can always drop them in so others can benefit.

We’re also really keen to hear your growing tips. Come and add them to our ‘greenboard’ or email hello@tamarenergycommunity.com or call 07969 569 444.

Your small donation can be doubled until 17:00 on 17th November … Please support us

This year Transition Tavistock is taking part in Grow Your Tenner, an annual match funding campaign run by Localgiving.

This is an amazing opportunity for Transition Tavistock.  We encourage all of you to get involved in whatever way you can – be it as a fundraiser, a donor or simply by spreading the word.

During this campaign Localgiving will match all online donations up to £10, and monthly donations up to £10 per month for 3 months.

With the added incentive of your monthly donation being matched, it is the best time to set up a Direct Debit for our cause. A regular donation will help us to continue our work and our community space at Local Matters for the foreseeable future.

To donate to us or find out more about Grow Your Tenner you can visit: https://localgiving.org/transitiontavistock.

Grow Your Tenner 2016 will run from 10am on Tuesday 18th October until 5pm on Thursday 17th November, or until the money runs out. Remember, only donations made in this time will be eligible for match funding! We think the money is likely to run out this week, so please act quickly.

On your marks, get set… Grow those Tenners!

We need to raise £4000 per year to keep our services running.

This enables Transition Tavistock to pay for insurance and other general running costs, make a contribution to Local Matters rent, rates, utility costs and admin, and support initiatives run by our volunteers such as the growing projects from Roots to Transition and Tasty Tavy.

Donating is easy, just visit localgiving.org/transitiontavistock, click on the ‘Donate Now’ or ‘Give Monthly’ button, enter you details and you’re all done!

We really appreciate your on-going support!
We would also like to thank the person who is already supporting us on a monthly basis. This is really welcomed and makes a big difference to us.

Unlocking the Power of Community – Energy Fair 2016

Unlocking the Power of Community is the theme for our annual energy fair on Saturday October 15th which will take place in Local Matters community space in Elbow Lane, Tavistock, from 10:00 until 15:00.

This is very apt as we work to complete our Community Solar Project to put community owned solar panels on a number of roofs across the area. These solar roofs enable our host sites to reduce their energy costs and be renewable generators. Any surplus is used to support fuel poverty and energy advice locally.

The local community has come together to raise £110,000 to finance part of the project and we’ll be launching a community share offer later in the year.

Our energy fair will be bringing together local leading local renewable energy suppliers, retrofit specialists and community energy and environmental groups from across Devon and Cornwall including New Generation Energy, The Fell Partnership, Mike Wye (natural building products), Sungift and ZLC Energy and The Utility Warehouse.

Please come along, find out more about what we’re doing at Local Matters, talk to our exhibitors and learn about Tamar Energy Community’s first community financed project.

Call or email us for more information. Email hello@tamarenergycommunity.com or call 07969 569 444.

Climate Matters – Sat 30th Jan 2016

Does climate change matter to the Tavistock area? We think so! …

And so did others locally who came and joined us in the Guide Hall, Tavistock today, Saturday 30th Jan. 2016 between 11:00 and 13:00.

We had an open meeting to share ideas and link up local actions on climate change.

We discussed what’s already going on and what else we might do.
There was a lot of interest in learning, influencing, practical action and connecting with others.

We’ll publish a summary shortly, and some suggestions for meeting up again.

Thanks to everyone who came along and participated, to the folks who arranged it and helped make it happen … and to the Tavistock Times for their support.

Saturday 30th January, 11am to 1pm,

You’ll hear about communities printing their own money, growing food everywhere, localising their economies and setting up community power stations. It’s … about responding to uncertain times with solutions and optimism.
In a world that is awash with gloom, here is a story of hope, ingenuity and the power of growing vegetables in unexpected places.”

Small Business Saturday in Tavistock

We celebrated Small Business Saturday (6th December) in Tavistock with a stall outside the pannier market. Organised by Transition Tavistock and Totally Locally Tavistock, and supported by FSB, we put on a display and promoted small business across Tavistock and its parishes. It was also an opportunity to promote the Tavistock and District Local Economic Blueprint.

small business saturday group

We met up with Geoffrey Cox MP, David Shepherd and Simon Earland from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), Lisa Piper (Tavistock BID) and Richard Searight (Peninsula Rail Group).

It was a great chance to pilot our Blueprint questionnaire.
If you’re involved in the local supply chains for food and drink, retrofit or local energy generation … or would like to be … or you’re a consumer who’d like to have a say then get in touch (info@transitiontavistock.org.uk; 07969569444).
